Novo Nordisk Bets Big on AWS: Inside the AI Co-Innovation Hub Reshaping Drug Discovery
Novo Nordisk named AWS its preferred cloud and AI partner, launching a co-innovation hub in London to compress drug discovery timelines using Amazon Bio Discovery and Bedrock AgentCore.
The Danish pharmaceutical giant that brought the world Ozempic and Wegovy is doubling down on artificial intelligence. On August 10, 2026, Novo Nordisk announced a sweeping strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), naming the cloud provider its preferred cloud platform and strategic AI partner. At the center of the deal is a physical co-innovation hub at Novo Nordisk’s King’s Cross facility in London, where scientists and engineers will work side by side to compress the timeline from drug target identification to first human dose.
The announcement arrives at a pivotal moment for Novo Nordisk. The company forecast that revenue and profit could decline as much as 13% in 2026, battered by intensifying GLP-1 competition, pricing pressure, and patent challenges. Against that backdrop, the AWS partnership is not just a technology upgrade — it is a strategic gambit to rebuild the pipeline that made Novo Nordisk the most valuable company in Europe.
The Co-Innovation Hub: Scientists and Engineers Under One Roof
Drug discovery is inherently cross-disciplinary, yet the teams involved often operate in silos. Scientists generate hypotheses; engineers build computational tools to test them; data specialists translate results into clinical decisions. When these functions are separated, the result is handoff delays, context loss, and insights that take weeks to move between teams.
The co-innovation hub is designed to eliminate those gaps. It brings together Novo Nordisk’s research and development teams with engineers, AI specialists, and applied scientists from AWS’s Forward Deployed Engineering team and AWS Professional Services organization. The goal is straightforward but ambitious: when an AI-driven process surfaces a new insight about a candidate molecule, the engineers who built the model and the research leaders who understand the clinical implications should be in the same room — making decisions in real time, refining experimental designs on the spot, and closing the loop between computational prediction and physical experiment.
This co-located model is increasingly seen as a competitive necessity in pharmaceutical R&D. Eli Lilly, Roche, and Sanofi have all made similar investments in colocated AI-science teams. The difference here is scale: Novo Nordisk operates a global workforce of more than 66,700 people across 80 countries, and the AWS partnership is designed to extend AI capabilities across the entire organization, not just a single research unit.
Amazon Bio Discovery: AI Meets the Wet Lab
The partnership’s technological backbone rests on two purpose-built AWS services. The first, Amazon Bio Discovery, is a life-sciences application that gives scientists direct access to biological AI models for generating and evaluating potential drug candidates. Crucially, the service connects computational design with physical laboratory testing through integrated lab partners — companies like Twist Bioscience that can synthesize and assay molecules designed in silico.
This creates an iterative experimentation cycle. An AI model proposes a candidate molecule; a lab partner synthesizes it; assay results flow back into the model; a refined candidate is generated. The cycle repeats, compressing what has traditionally been the most time-consuming and expensive stage of drug development. By automating the loop between digital design and wet-lab validation, Amazon Bio Discovery aims to shave months or years off the earliest phases of drug discovery.
For Novo Nordisk, which specializes in serious chronic diseases including diabetes, obesity, and rare blood disorders, the application is clear. The company needs to replenish a pipeline that is under severe competitive pressure, and AI-driven target identification and molecule design could surface candidates that traditional screening approaches would miss.
Amazon Bedrock AgentCore: Production-Grade Agentic AI
The second pillar, Amazon Bedrock AgentCore, provides the infrastructure for building AI agents that can reason across enterprise data, execute multi-step workflows, and integrate with existing enterprise systems. Where Bio Discovery focuses on the scientific pipeline, AgentCore is about operational scale — moving AI from isolated experiments to production-grade applications that operate reliably across a global pharmaceutical organization.
The partnership extends well beyond research and development. Novo Nordisk will use AWS’s AI and cloud services across commercial operations and enterprise IT as well. The company has already demonstrated the appetite for this: more than 25,000 Novo Nordisk employees currently use a generative AI solution built on Amazon Bedrock to create chatbots, retrieve information, draft documents, and serve as virtual colleagues for nonregulated processes. The new partnership is designed to extend that kind of embedded AI across every stage of drug discovery, development, manufacturing, and commercialization.
Thilde Hummel Bøgebjerg, Executive Vice President of Enterprise IT & Quality at Novo Nordisk, framed the partnership as fundamentally about people, not just technology. “AI has the potential to transform how we discover, develop and deliver medicines,” she said, “but real impact comes from combining advanced technology with deep scientific expertise and a clear focus on patients. By expanding our partnership with AWS, we are creating an environment where our scientists, engineers and technology teams can co-innovate, scale responsibly and accelerate the journey from scientific insight to meaningful outcomes.”
The Bigger Picture: Big Pharma’s AI Arms Race
The Novo Nordisk–AWS deal is the latest and one of the most significant moves in a pharmaceutical AI arms race that has been accelerating throughout 2026. Novo Nordisk itself had already announced a partnership with OpenAI in April 2026 to apply AI across drug development, manufacturing, and supply chain operations. Eli Lilly struck a major GPU procurement deal with NVIDIA. Sanofi, AstraZeneca, and Roche have all deepened their commitments to AI-driven discovery platforms.
What sets the AWS partnership apart is its end-to-end scope. Most pharma-AI deals focus on a single stage of the drug development pipeline — target identification, clinical trial optimization, or manufacturing. The Novo Nordisk–AWS agreement spans the entire value chain, from biological AI models generating drug candidates in the lab to agentic AI agents streamlining commercial operations and enterprise IT. AWS is positioning itself not as a vendor but as a co-innovation partner embedded within Novo Nordisk’s organization.
Dan Sheeran, Vice President and General Manager of Healthcare and Life Sciences at AWS, emphasized the breadth of the collaboration. “Novo Nordisk’s partnership with AWS shows what’s possible when you pair AI with deep life-sciences expertise — removing bottlenecks across drug discovery, not just studying them,” he said. “Together, we’re building agentic AI applications that accelerate research, clinical development, manufacturing, and IT operations to help Novo Nordisk move faster end-to-end.”
A Race Against Time
The partnership also deepens a broader commercial relationship between Novo Nordisk and Amazon. The pharmaceutical company already collaborates with Amazon Pharmacy, Amazon Ads, and Amazon One Medical to transform how therapies are marketed and delivered to patients. Adding AWS as the foundational cloud and AI layer creates an end-to-end Amazon relationship spanning discovery, development, marketing, and distribution.
Whether this is enough to reverse Novo Nordisk’s fortunes remains an open question. The company faces what analysts have called a “must-win” year in 2026, with copycat GLP-1 drugs threatening its core franchise and pipeline setbacks weighing on investor confidence. The AWS partnership will not produce new drugs overnight — drug development timelines still run in years, not months. But by embedding AI into every stage of discovery and operations, Novo Nordisk is making a calculated bet that the compounding effect of faster, smarter research will translate into a stronger, more resilient pipeline.
For the broader AI industry, the deal is another signal that agentic AI — autonomous systems that can reason, plan, and execute multi-step workflows — is moving from hype to mission-critical infrastructure. When one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies entrusts its core R&D process to AI agents, the technology has crossed a threshold. The co-innovation hub in King’s Cross may well become a bellwether for how the next generation of medicines is discovered.
